Writer of Poetry
Darius has sometimes been called a “poet” in reference to his song lyrics. But poetry and song lyrics are very different forms, with different conventions and aesthetics. According to Darius, "a poem must contain its own music, whereas a song relies on musical accompaniment."
Darius had written poetry (separate from song lyrics) for years, but in order to learn more about the differences between the two, he hit the books and ended up with a BA in literature from UCLA and an MA in creative writing/poetry from Lancaster University in England.
While at Lancaster, he discovered formalism and started writing poetry more seriously. He came to love traditional forms, because they carried the music he sought when there was no music alongside. His poems have been published widely, on both sides of the Atlantic. They've appeared in Measure, Smiths Knoll, Agenda, The Red Wheelbarrow, Equinox, Poetry Salzburg Review, and other poetry and literary journals.
His collection To See the Sound was published in 2014 by David Robert Books.
